I was inspecting a crankset with Quarq spiders on it earlier and it really got me wondering how it all really works.  I’ve read that it has some kind of strain gauge in there and the slight deflection during pedaling gets measured into a torque amount.  Once we have torque, we have force and Power is just Force x Velocity (easily measured with a magnet on a fixed point).

The basics are nice and all but I wanted to see how it REALLY works so I looked it up on Google Patents.  I didn’t find what I was looking for but did stumble upon Quarq’s design for a cleat mounted power meter system.  It isn’t the same but it shows how they work it out.
